Amazon was in the process of converting a large portion of their merchandising sections to a responsive, modular grid format, and needed a template for the various hodgepodge of frameworks for all the product lines to follow. The Camera & Photography section was selected to be the first to roll out the new standards, and that particular product line was one of mine.
My role was to redesign the landing page and all the major subpages to fit into the new grid style, while still adhering to the Amazon corporate styleguide as well as the styleguide for this product line, and to have it be clean, sleek, and visually compelling for users.
All product imagery was provided, in addition to tips/how-to videos, and text. The products needed some visual grounding, and I chose a subtle grayscale abstract background for each, and added shadows and reflections for visual interest and a consistent visual theme. I needed to find and curate a large number of stock images to complement the existing visuals, as well as organize a layout that would be flexible and scalable enough to apply to future incarnations of this section as well as several other product sections on the site.
Once I had gathered all the assets and created new ones, I built the initial grid layout. A few tweaks were needed here and there, but otherwise the design was approved intact and fairly quickly; subsequently the grid layout has been consistently applied to several of the other product lines on the site.
